Well, September 2020 is gone and it’s time to start preparing our homes for the lazy, crazy, hazy days of summer. What better inspiration could there be for summer interior styles than to look at some of the world’s most popular island holiday destinations.

We’re excited to share with you 3 island-inspired interior design styles that we’re really hooked on at the moment. We’ll also show how you can achieve these looks in your own home. Of course we have to start with our beautiful neighbouring island, Bali.

No. 1: Bali – Australia’s Holiday Destination of Choice

Situated in the Indonesian archipelago, Bali is Australia’s most popular island holiday destination. Surrounded by stunning beaches, the island of Bali is covered with rice paddy fields and lush vegetation, not to mention the beautiful coral reefs that surround the island. With its exotic ancient culture, Bali is renowned for its warm hospitality as well as its palaces and exotic temples set against spectacular natural backdrops. When you head inland, pristine jungles and towering volcanoes offer Australian visitors so much to see and do.

Interior Styling the Balinese Way

The Balinese interior style is based on natural elements available on the island. Materials like cane, bamboo, and rattan are absolute must-haves when styling the Balinese way. Think cane occasional chairs, rattan dining chairs, barstools, and pendant lights, and don’t forget bamboo lanterns and bedheads. A Balinese interior wouldn’t be complete without weather-resistant timbers like paulownia and teak.

Balinese interior styling focuses mainly on Balinese artisanal handcrafted pieces, with handwoven rugs and baskets from natural fibres like sisal, jute and seagrass adding warmth and texture to your Balinese inspired space.

For added interest, bring life to your space with abaca or macramé wall-hangings, seashells, linen cushions, and throws with tassel fringes, real or faux leafy palm plants, and classic patterns like herringbone or vertical stripes.

Also featuring heavily in Balinese interior styling is handmade earthenware ceramics, especially items like planters, pots, bowls, and vases. And a raw finish is considered a better finish!

This aesthetic typically uses a muted, rather neutral colour palette, which helps to achieve the relaxed, open feel. Think crisp whites for your walls, sofa upholstery, and bed linen, to blend perfectly with the natural grains of the cane, rattan, and bamboo furnishings.

But don’t forget about colour! Colour can be added through your cushions, rugs, and other soft accents. Think warm jewel tones and pale, pastel tones for wall art. And don’t forget that your Balinese-inspired space needs a calming coastal print. However, don’t be too heavy with decorations and ensure your Balinese interior doesn’t get too busy or full of clutter.

Our final piece of advice for interior styling the Balinese way is to keep things simple with some lounges, hammocks, deckchairs, and daybeds. You’ll always be looking for ways to chill out in your beautiful, relaxing Balinese style home.

No. 2: Santorini –  Arguably ‘The Best Greek Island’

sabtirubu

The Greek island Santorini, which forms part of the Cyclades in the Aegean Sea, is not only a natural wonder, it’s also one of the world’s top travel destinations. Travellers are continuously drawn to the island of Santorini to experience the island’s culture and rich history. The natural and rare beauty of Santorini, the views, the breathtaking caldera, the lunar landscapes and the extraordinary volcanic beaches are the wondrous results of a volcanic eruption that occurred thousands of years ago that can only be seen in Santorini.

Everything is totally harmonious in Santorini. Its blue-domed, white-washed edifices, paved paths and candy-coloured houses blend in beautifully with the spectacular surroundings, creating unbelievable images. It’s the whitewashed buildings and blue-domed churches that form the basis of our Greek island-inspired interior style. A Santorini-inspired interior, like most Grecian interiors, could be defined as a palette of crisp whites and vibrant blues.

Interior Styling the Santorini Way

The buildings of Santorini were historically painted white as a way to reflect the hot sun; however, we’re not suggesting that your entire house should be painted white, or even blue. Wall art, cushions and bedding, rugs, table linen, and so many other smaller pieces can be used to implement this colour palette.

When it comes to furnishings, no Santorini-inspired interior would be complete without weathered timbers. You’re looking for wooden furniture pieces, like coffee tables, barstools, dining tables, and so on, with purposely aged and worn finishes that look like they’ve lived their life by the seaside. These pieces will add so much personality and character to your space.

Of course Greece is renowned for its pottery, with much of its history preserved in its ancient pottery pieces. So, if you’re going to craft a Santorini-inspired interior, you’ll be looking for ceramics and pottery. For a classic look, choose traditional styles of vases and pots, including antique amphorae. Also perfect would be ceramics in unusual, fluid shapes, especially if they’re finished with a white or blue glaze.

Finish off this beautiful interior with cushions, tableware, and other traditional Mediterranean accents, like marine-inspired motives, and Greek key and tile patterns.

No. 3: The Caribbean Islands – When You’re Looking for The Best Tropical Beach Vacation

caribbean islands

The Caribbean Islands are renowned as one of the most beautiful tourist destinations in the world. With its laid-back culture, the Caribbean Islands (also known as Islands of the Caribbean or the West Indies) is a massive archipelago located in the Caribbean Sea. With 13 sovereign states and 17 dependent territories, the Caribbean is primarily located between North and South America, spreading across more than 1.06 million square miles.

When you think Caribbean Islands, you think tropical palm forests, white sandy beaches with clear turquoise water, which is why adventurers, honeymooners, and holidaymakers alike love visiting the Caribbean Islands.

Interior Styling the Caribbean Way

Because of their British colonial history, an interior styled the Caribbean Islands way is a combination of British style and resources found on the islands. Your Caribbean inspired interior will use a lot of natural grasses, bamboo, and cane, including whatever organic materials can be found on the islands.

Perhaps the most defining feature of a Caribbean styled interior is the use of dark timbers. This would previously have meant using costly woods like ebony and mahogany, but today these same finishes can be achieved with paint and varnishes.

The landscape of many Caribbean Islands consists of lush forests, which is why palm trees feature heavily in this beautiful style of interior decorating. To introduce a Caribbean island feel to your space, think palm trees in wall art, prints on cushions, and even on wallpapers. And don’t forget lots of greenery, in terms of both actual plant life and colour. Of course the best look is achieved with tall, leafy palms, but artificial plants work well too.
